What should nose weight be?

The recommended nose weight is 5-7% of the total trailer weight, with 7% being ideal for stability. For a 1000kg trailer, aim for 50-70kg nose weight. Never exceed the towbar or towball rating.

How do I measure nose weight?

Use a nose weight gauge (available from caravan shops) placed under the coupling with the jockey wheel raised. Alternatively, use bathroom scales with a piece of timber to reach coupling height.

What happens if nose weight is too low?

Too little nose weight means not enough downward force on the towball. This makes the trailer rear-heavy and prone to dangerous snaking, especially at motorway speeds or when overtaken by lorries. A swaying trailer can pull the car off course and cause a jackknife.

What happens if nose weight is too high?

Excessive nose weight pushes down the rear of the car, lifting the front wheels and reducing steering grip. This makes the car feel light and vague at the front, increases braking distances, and can cause premature rear tyre wear. It may also exceed the towbar or towball rating.
