How much is the London Congestion Charge?

The London Congestion Charge is £15 per day (as of 2024). It applies Monday to Sunday, 7am to 6pm, except Christmas Day. It covers the central London zone. You can pay online, by phone, or set up Auto Pay. There is a 90% discount for residents within the zone.

What is ULEZ and how much does it cost?

ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) is a daily charge of £12.50 for vehicles that do not meet emission standards. Since August 2023, it covers all of Greater London. Compliant vehicles are: petrol cars meeting Euro 4 (generally 2006+), diesel cars meeting Euro 6 (generally 2015+), and all electric/hydrogen vehicles.

Is my car ULEZ compliant?

Most petrol cars registered after 2006 meet Euro 4 and are ULEZ compliant. Most diesel cars registered after September 2015 meet Euro 6 and are compliant. Check your V5C logbook or use the TfL online checker. All electric and hydrogen vehicles are compliant.

Are electric cars exempt from the Congestion Charge?

Yes, fully electric (battery electric) vehicles are exempt from both the Congestion Charge and ULEZ. Plug-in hybrids that were previously exempt lost their Congestion Charge exemption in 2025, but remain ULEZ compliant if they meet the emission standards.

What happens if I do not pay?

If you do not pay the Congestion Charge by midnight the next charging day, you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £160 (reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days). For ULEZ non-compliance, the penalty is also £160 (£80 early). Cameras automatically read number plates.
