UK Vehicle Tax (VED) Bands

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) — commonly called road tax or car tax — is based on your car's CO&sub2; emissions. The first year rate depends on the exact emissions figure, while the standard rate from year two onwards is a flat fee (with a supplement for cars with a list price over £40,000). This page covers rates for cars first registered on or after 1 April 2017.

Diesel vehicles that do not meet the Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standard pay a higher first-year rate — shown in the “All Other Diesel” column. Most new diesels sold since 2020 meet RDE2.

Petrol or diesel£190Flat rate regardless of CO&sub2;

From year two, nearly all cars pay the same flat rate of £190 per year. The only variation is a £10 discount for alternative fuel vehicles (hybrids, bioethanol, LPG). If your car had a list price (including options) over £40,000, you pay an additional £410 per year for five years, making the total £600 per year.

Electric Vehicle VED Changes

Zero-emission vehicles currently pay just £10 per year. From April 2025, EVs will pay the full standard rate of £190 per year, and the £40,000 list price supplement will also apply to EVs. The first-year rate for 0 g/km vehicles will move to £10 (Band B equivalent). This was announced in the Autumn Statement 2022 to ensure all motorists contribute to road maintenance as EV adoption grows.
